How to get a website
A domain means your place on the web, which is a website. You need a database to hold html pages.
To get a website isn't that hard, you find a host that you like and you get signed up and they will give you
databases to hold your webpages and you can name it what ever you like and they will register it for you in a
registrar. This is called domain name.
Your host will offer you a website builder and templates to use. This is fine if you need a website in a hurry,
but you really should build your own pages using html. It isn't as hard as it may seem at first, you don't need
to know a lot about codes, you can copy and paste codes and reuse them over and over and in time you will start
to get to know how to write your own basic codes.
The basic structure of a website
Your webpages will be in your computer in a folder.
You buy a website to use as their database to hold your webpages for public view.
You use ftp to upload your webpages from your computer folders to that data base
That data base also has folders. Use those to store your images, ebooks etc. You can make new folders at will.
So your webpages go into the directory/database under your domain. This is called root directly, meaning they
aren't in subfolders, only images, ebooks and other files go into the sub folders.
You can get free webpage builders like firstpage which you can get free at http://www.downloads.com/. Firstpage
is a free webpage builder. If you want better, dreamweaver costs $400. If you use first page, save every move
because it crashs all the time, litterally, all the time.
Don't be intimidated by firstpage, most of that stuff you won't need. Take baby steps. Add a table. add an image
on the table. Add some font. Just look around and play with things. Once you get the hang of it, everything you
do can be cloned to be used on the next page and so on. Its all copy and paste.
Get your images ready, size them for the web. I like to include the dimensions right in the name because you need
to add the dimensions when you put images on your pages.
Next you need an directory to upload your pages, image files, Pdfs and anything else. Smart FTP client is your
uploader to your website. You can get a free ftp uploader for free at www.downloads.com called Smart FTP Client.
Your items on ebay will be picked up by google right now without doing anything. To help google find you, the
more you write and descibe on your auctions and products, the more words google picks up.
I was shocked to find one of my DVDs listed on top of google, it was only a 7 day listing but I used the right word
somewhere to describe my product.
Sample: bluesjeans is too common, "moms blue jeans" will get you right on top of google because no one else used
those words, but then, no one will look for moms jeans, so try to find words that people will type into google yet
not too common.
Using your website with ebay is easy. I have my firstpage open and sellect all my text and paste it into ebays
html box as I list items. I have a page for every product, and keep updating or improving them. When I list
something new, I make the listing on a webpage and I'm only in ebay for a short time.
With a website you can make your ebay auctions and use as many images as you like. You can use your data base
to hold ebooks, slideshows, movies etc. All you have to do is start a new folder in your FTP directory, and
upload your PDF files in a compressed folder to the new folder in your directory. Right click on the compressed
folder once its uploaded and copy the URL. Take that Url and when you list an ebook, there will be a place where
you can paste it in and people will get this link after they pay for the ebook.
This screen shot below shows how to drag your images from your computer directory to your website database
directory using ftp up-loaded. This example show how I up-load an ebook. Notice the folder named images,
thats where you can keep all your images and you can create all the subfolders you want.
This screen shot above is my ftp up-loader again is showing how to get the URLs to use in your pages. Copy these urls of pages, images and ebooks and store in a notepad.
This screenshot above shows how I loaded an ebook. If I wanted to add html pages, I would not use these folders, they have to go into the root directory, directly under my website folder named fisheadtackle.com.
You should have a control panel, that is where your website builder and everything else is.
The first thing you need is the address your host gave you. It may be numbers, it should be like: "
Your IP is: 54.445.665.11 "
You will also have a password to get into your control panel etc. Keep these in a safe place.
Now take that number or web address they gave you and the password and put it in your ftp.
If you haven't downloaded your free ftp from downloads.com, go do that now. It is called "smart ftp client".
After you install it, add your number/webaddress that godaddy gave you and when you sign in fpt.
That will connect to your data base.
Now you can add pages by dragging from the folder directory on the right, which is your computer, into your
database directory on the left.
Get a free firstpage web builder in downloads.com too.
Google, yahoo, msn etc are search sites. If you list your website with google, it will give your URL to the
other search engines. Actually, google will pick up your website without having to list it, that comes
automatically. You can help google zero in by adding more keywords and listing in googles webmaster tools,
but don't worry about all this, you will be listed anyway for now.
