Fishing in April

The Walleye bite slows in April. The Bass and Crappie bite start to pick up a little.

One day I was Walleye fishing and the fish were running small and they were in deep water below the Dam at pool 14. There wasn’t many people out as fishing was getting tough. I decided quit and go try for Bass at a lake, and so I ran the trolling motor on high, headed for some slack current up near the bank in a corner of the pocket and as I was reeling my jig in a had a huge smash, it was a 7 pound female Walleye in about 6? of water.

That’s how it goes in April. Big fish up shallow but it’s not easy fishing and one could get skunked easily. We went Bass fishing and never had six decent Bass while slowly swimming 1/4 jig and pork.

Crappie fishing will be picking up soon. Look for fish in the mid depths and shallows toward the end of the month.

Mid April is a good time to catch Northern Pike and Muski with jigs in this area of the Midwest. Find these fish in creeks, lakes and tailwaters below dams.

Find warm water for Bass on the river, look for bait fish. Also find fish in mid depths. Current will offer more stable conditions with the temperature going up and down so much this time of year, but you have to know where the fish are and fish real slow using jigs, spinnerbaits and crankbaits. A lot of time the fish will be where most people run their boats or they will be behind them as fisherman go right on by the fish. Back
