NWS&W was a mini-mill producing structural steel flange beams, channels, angles, merchant bars, rods, and wire.
Northwestern Steel & Wire in Sterling Rockfalls Illinois went out of business as per its Chapter 7 liquidation filing under bankruptcy in 2002, with bankers walking away
with tens of millions of dollars in retirement funds. Workers not only lost pensions but they lost insurance also. The mill was broke apart and sold. Sterling Steel now operates the
electic furnace department and 12" mill, the rest was sold and tore down except the newest mill, the 14" mill which was sold a couple times and the businesses that run it now
got it at a low cost and employ very few workers.

At one time the mill was employee owned and was doing very well, but in 1992 NWSW ceded control to investors Kohlberg & Co which was the beginning of the end for NWSW. Instead of
investing in the company to make improvements to compete, they made bad decisions by buying a failing mill in Texas and Kentucky. As workers took several concessions,
managment took raises and it was bad management that caused the mill to go under.
This 2 hour dvd footage is of the furnace dept. and 24" mill from a crane. It shows bars going through the mill, the hotbed and everything in-between, and shipping dept.
The dvd may contain scary scenes, not for everyone. Since the mill no longer exists and so many people like myself spent their lives in there, may want to see the old days of
NWS&W. The filming was in 1997. Home-footage filmed from a crane shows the 24" I-beam mill, shipping and furnace department. See a bar run through the mill forming an I-beam and follow it all the way
through the process ending up in shipping where it is loaded on a truck or railroad car. Also has footage of the Caster and Electric Furnace dept.
