What’s New – Telephoto Lens

I haven’t been fishing lately because of a soar back, doing too much yard work caught up to me. So I have been working on this blog and my website, and of course going through photos in the never ending editing.

I bought a new telephoto lens finally. Instead of taking a vacation with our tax money I used my half to invest in my photography. This is what I bought: Sigma 120-400mm F/4.5-5.6 DG HSM APO OS Lens For Canon. This model is for sale at walmart and other places going for $1000 plus tax. I saw one on ebay and he says it’s in perfect condition so I won the auction for $740 and I am anxiously waiting to get it. It can’t be too old, they announced it in 2008 so it came out after that and it is the current model for sale now. This will open a lot of doors. In the past I have been just out of range of getting some nice shots of birds and wildlife. It was so discouraging that I didn’t think it was worth it to go for my nature walks. Well now it will be. The only bad thing is now I am back to needing to switch lenses and that is so risky for getting dust and lint in the lens or camera. This is especially bad in the boat with carpet lint being out in the wind. So I need to figure out what I’ll do. I know I need one camera with the small lens for taking photos of fighting fish and landscape, so the other camera may have to have lenses switched. I could buy a third camera but then I would have to have more storage in the boat, another waterproof tackle box that I already have ready with my video cameras in. It will be about twice as heavy as my other zoom lens, weighing a hefty 4 pounds, so that will be hard to use and hold steady and I will need a tripod in the boat all the time. So I will have to see how I will fit it in but I am very excited about it. My lens I use now extends to 250 mm, so this 400 mm will be much better.

Update 4/28/12:

I had problems with the lens, it wouldn’t focus properly, it needed calibrated. That can cost about $170. The seller would have covered it maybe, but I only had a 3-day warranty and there was other problems so I sent it back. He wasn’t happy about but is excepting it. So I should get my money back unless he decides to give me trouble, then I will have to go through pay pal or ebay to get my money back. The other problems were the images had halos around subjects in photos. I looked close inside and saw what looked like a small mold spot and something on the front glass that was either mold or some kind of film on it. It had a filter on it, which might have been where the problem was but I couldn’t get it to come off. In any case, I wasn’t about to send it back to sigma to get calibrated and the glass cleaned, because I could end up out a lot of money and the mold would surely come back. So now I will have to spend $330 more if I want the new lens from walmart, and even more if I want an extended warranty walmart offers.

So I am back to square one, I’m not sure what I want. I do want the telephoto lens, but there is no money in it and I really need better landscape lens, which won’t be too exciting like a telephoto lens would be.
