Lake Erie Trip 2014

We just got back from Lake Erie on Sunday, and it was a good trip. The walleye were biting up shallow for me, right where big Bass were biting. The boats were all out between green and rattlesnake island on west and it was too rough for me. I could have fished it ok but it’s not much fun when your rocking all over the place and the bite was slow so that would make for a long day. I was having plenty of fun trolling around the islands even though there was many obstacles besides hard to find fish. We had the cotton wood trees putting out cotton so think it looked like it was snowing. Then the scum weeds, green floating weeds that grouped into masses and impossible to troll through. I thought that was bad enough but then came the mayflies and other bugs that covered the surface. So it was either fish in the windy sides and get beat up with waves or try to fish through all the surface crap. Every time I got fish located the wind switched and pushed the boat toward shore so that was a waste of time. Lake Erie threw everything at me she had, but non the less I did pretty good. I do have a lot of photos but no video that I was hoping for. The bite was just too slow. The bass were 3-4 pounds and I caught over 100 of those and when I did catch a walleye it was usually a big one. I did get the photos I wanted to use for my T-shirts, finally.

We will definitely be returning to south bass and put in bay. We used to go there all the time but the madness got to me and so we enjoyed the peace and quiet of middle bass for a few years, but now that we returned we realized it is a lot of fun and lots to do for the wife while I fish. It also gives me a chance to fish the bay more while still being close to the other islands. There was construction going on with new docking systems being put in so the main road and boat ramp was closed. But then that gave me a chance to drive through the crowded street and see all the people walking around.
