Eagle Nest Rock River. The male brought a Red-breasted Merganser back to the nest, plucked. He was totally worn out after that. Must have had to kill it, maybe had to flap his way back to shore if it was too heavy and had to carry it back to the nest after preparing it.
This is Charile, my pet catfish. I feed him walleye. He is a flathead. You can find him in the rock river near Erie Illinois.
I saw my first river otter today, 3 of them while out on the rock river near Sterling IL. It was cool seeing the otters, I thought I was seeing something strange running down the bank last time out, looked way too big for a ground hog. I think I know where their den is. I bet they eat a lot of fish, but that only makes up a portion of their diet. They also eat snakes, frogs, crayfish and weeds. They can stay underwater for about 8 minutes and swim quite fast and they cover a lot of water. I was seeing them off and on in a mile stretch. I think I found their de, a large mound on the bank with lots of holes and there was a couple places where they had been sliding down the bank it looked like.
Can you see him? I saw him before he saw me. He was limping pretty bad, has some kind of injury above his tail. Herbie smelled him and was at the edge of the boat. He seems to know the difference, he usually barks at big dogs but knows what a coyote is and stays quiet. I noticed the geese got real quiet in that area, they usually honk away when people get near. I guess fear people less than a coyote. This was near Sterling IL.
