Rip off for Trolling Motor Parts
Posted on March 9th, 2010 CommentLast year I found a nice motorguide bow mount trolling motor for $20 at a rummage sale, and it works great. This year I had to order a base for the shaft on a transom motorguide trolling motor, which is a small metal bracket, nothing to it and it cost me $28 from www.trollingmotorparts.com/ and i feel like I got ripped off. I think new trolling motors can be bought for a little more than that. Like with marine parts, they like to jack the prices up on parts for fisherman. What could I do, no one else carried it that I could find it anywhere else. I think fisherman should never throw anything away in which parts can be taken from and sell to each other so these outfits won’t be taking so much of our money.

Take trolling motor apart and replace part put back together = 30 minutes.
Drill larger holes and bore out = 30 minutes
Fix stripped threads (came with) and find new parts since it came with nothing but the basic part = 60 minutes -

March Fishing
Posted on March 4th, 2010 CommentMarch is a transition month, the ice should be melting in the lakes and rivers. The Illinois river is probably fishable before most of the Mississippi River pools from 14 on up. The fish will be biting like winter fishing, find fish down deep using three-way rigs or jigs and the fish will be fat with eggs. As the water warms the open water below the dam will get bigger and bigger and this should open the boat ramps to go fishing. The ice will be coming over the dam when it is below 32 degrees in the mornings and evenings as it expands and moves like a glacier. As it warms the ice will start to break up and come over the dam. At some point the whole pool above will break lose and come over the dam and so be-careful not to get trapped in this ice flow or you could be floating down river trapped.
The bigger Walleye will start to migrate to the dams to feed and some will spawn there as the water temperatures rise above 33 degrees. The fish can still be found down deep but look for big females up in shallow areas. At about mid 40’s the fish will start to spawn and then they will be hard to catch for about six weeks. If you do catch a big fish before spawn it will weigh a lot more with all the eggs in it. Be sure to release these spawners for future fishing. Take a camera and get photos and then it’s easier to release them.
The lakes will start to thaw out and after they open up it is a good time to catch a big Bass. Try a jig & pig, spinnerbait or rattletrap. Fish the deep edge of the shallows and maybe find fish shallow on warm sunny days. On the river look for baitfish and you may find Bass nearby. Look for shallow areas near deep water, look for warm water and don’t count out current on cold cloudy days.
Be sure to use my slip sinker to replace the three-way rigs, it takes less knots and out performs all others.

Golden Eagle vs. Deer
Posted on February 27th, 2010 CommentThey spotted a Golden Eagle chasing a Deer near here the other day. Maybe that is where some of our Cats disapeared to.
