Fish Story: Moon Bass

big bass

I went bass fishing one night, I've seen it before, every fish in the Midwest was biting. Here is the secret: We were having a thunderstorm, it was may and spawning time for big bass. I called my buddy and I asked if he wanted to meet me at a pond, I told him this was it, the time was right. I waited in the truck, as I got off earlier than Jeff. It was raining steady and lightning constantly. I had second thoughts, maybe it wasn't the time. I decided to walk down and make a few casts to see if they were biting. I made one cast one fish, and I went back and waited. Jeff pulled up, said he had doubts but I assured him they were biting. He wanted the good side of the pond, and I got the bad side, and we were to meet at the other end. I got there at the other end with a couple 4 pounders caught, before Jeff. While I
was waiting, I thought I'd do a depth check. I casted out and watched to see how long it took to hit bottom. I discovered I was fishing a flat, and there was a drop off near by. I could see my line because the lightning was non-stop. I casted out to the drop off and saw my lure hit the water as it lightning again and I saw a hit, and set the hook, and it was a big bass over 5. I wanted to show that one to Jeff to rub it in so I tied it to my belt. I casted out again, and the same thing happened, I saw the hit, it was a 6 pounders. I repeated and caught a 7, then an 8 pound bass. I had 5 hogs tied to my belt. I remember they kept biting me. So here comes Jeff bragging about catching 30 pounds of fish. I said lets see em, and he had a giant Channelcat is all, and it was close to 30. I then said, "I got that beat" and showed him my bass. We went into some kind of rage and tried to get my fish to release them. I agreed I would release them if he released his possible record catfish, and he agreed. I weighed each one and released them.

The secret is, when the time is right all the big fish will be biting within hundreds of miles. Around here is usually the moon toward the end of May.

Night Bites

There is a dock on lake Erie that has good walleye fishing at night in the fall. The dock is lit and has lots of baitfish. Crankbaits work best. It has deep water near by. You can sit on shallow reefs and cast crankbaits all night and do well.

On the Mississippi River you will find lots of catfisherman night fishing.

Slow rolling a jig n pig catches fish in lakes at night for bass. Swim it slow in the spring, swim and drop in the fall. The full moon or dark moon toward the end of May in northern Illinois is a good time to night fish for bass, they all move up shallow. A thunderstorm will greatly increase chances.
