Ok here we go, it is about to get good. I started out catching fish on the south side of Rattlesnake Island and as the days passed the water dirty water worked its way north and east and that seemed to push the fish with it. After 9 days I wound up fishing the north side of North Bass Island, so my final day before heading home I started out fishing there at the before it even got light out but the fish again had moved. I tried further east and I caught a giant Sheephead while trolling with my favorite crankbait that trip which was a clear silver bomber long A. I soon after hooked another big fish but being so tired I held my thumb on the spool a little too tight not letting the drag work and I broke off leaving my lure in the fishes mouth. Thats it I headed back to the cabin to rest, it had been a great trip with countless 4-6 pound Walleye. |

I laid down for a couple hours and awoke and looked out the window and saw the guys in a few cabins down filleting some 4-5 pound Walleye. They were loud and drunk, having a great day while I missed out. I don't usually ask anyone anything but since they were drunk I thought I'd take advantage and I went out and asked them where they caught the fish and they told me "right where you were this morning when you quit". Oh boy. |

I quick in the boat and headed back out. |

I saw there was a few boats in that area, like about 100 so I tried a new area, further east of North Bass Island. It was windy so I was drifting in the shipping lane. which was a deep narrow channel, about 40 feet deep and 20 feet just north and south of it. I let the east wind push me right down the channel using the electric trolling motor boost my speed so the spinner rig blades would keep spinning and to stay in the channel. |

I found one small area that had a hole with some big rocks (or some structure, ship wreck?) and every time I passed over it I was catching 4-5 pound Walleye. So after I passed over it, about a one mile pass, I started up the big motor and quick ran back one mile and drifted over it again. I was using spinner-rigs with clip-on sinkers. One close to the bottom, one half way up and one up close to the boat, but after finding only the deep lure was catching fish I dropped them all down close to the bottom. |

after a couple hours of catching fish I saw this ship coming towards me. |

and closer...

and closer...

I waited till the last minute and then figured I better get out of the way, so I put my trolling motor on high and headed south toward North Bass Island when all the sudden the depth rose from 34-40 feet to 18 feet and all three of my rods were snagged. I tried to circle around to where they were snagged as I let the ship pass and tried to free the first one. It wouldn't come free so I tried to break it off when I felt like I might be snagged on a limb, it kept going right back down after I pulled up on it, so I held it steady for a bit and noticed it felt like a head shaking, it was a fish! |

I played it out and it just would not come up. After awhile I got it half way up and looked over the side of the boat and down about 20 feet was a giant Walleye! That was a mistake, now I'm getting buck fever but I kept my cool and played it out. When it finally came to the surface I let it run one last time and it ran all the way back to the bottom and it took another 5 minute to get it up to the surface again. When it did I netted it and the line broke as I laid it on the boat floor as it flopped all around. There was no one around so I gave a loud shout with joy, this fish was huge! Now for the next rod. It too felt like a fish and indeed it was another big Walleye! It weighed just over 9 pounds and now for the last rod, and it too had a big Walleye on weighing 6.5 pounds! I got some marks so I would remember that exact spot and for the next few years it always produced. It was a long wide point. Anyway I grabbed the camera and started taking more photos. |
