How to use Big Planer Boards
Using big boards lets you run several lines at once and it can cover a lot more water with a wide path. A big board can easily run 50 feet out from the
boat. You can attach three lines off each side of the boat, so this is great for three or four guys in one boat. After you catch a fish you just feed out the
other lines to make room for the newest line to feed out.
Making your own board can be done. Figure out a way to connect two boards about 18" long and 12" apart. Drill holes into the bottom side and fill with lead. Try to
keep the back of the board a little heavier. Attach the rope toward the front so the board will run outward away from the boat.
After you feed out the board:
1. Cast out a crankbait and feed out some line;
2. Attach a rubberband to your line by wrapping it around line and running one end through the other;
3. Attach a shower curtain clip to the rope;
4. put rubberband in the shower curtain clip and close it;
5. Feed out the clip and rig until it gets close to the board;
6. Repeat this for the second line and feed it out to about halfway to the board;
7. Repeat one more time if you want three lines out;
After you catch a fish, just feed out the other lines on the rope giving you room to add another line, just rotate them them out.
Be sure to use thin rubberbands, or use old rubberbands that have cracks, or make small cuts in the rubberband or it may not break when a fish strikes.
You can also add clips to the shower curtain to clip the rubberbands on, then they will break free when a fish strike.
Below is a slightly worn yellowbird planer board. The clip on the right is the downrigger clip I add to
replace some clip that comes with the board that doesn't hold to the line, rather it slides down and hits the fish and makes fighting the fish
much harder adding more water resistance on your line. If it doesn't knock the fish off it will probably break your line. That little clip
could cost you as much as the board itself.
