The Rock River is a wide river with lots character. It has lots rocky shallows and many deep holes. It is a great Catfish
river, but also has Walleye, Smallmouth Bass and lots of other fish.
Below the lower dam at Sterling Rock Falls the river is shallow in most places and requires a boat with a jet drive motor.
There are some deep holes that hold Catfish and
other fish in the cold months. Fishing the dam area is always good for Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Stripers and Catfish. The large Flathead Catfish will
go there to spawn in the summer. You can pretty walk anywhere in the river around the dam, unless the water is high.
The pool above the upper dam all the way to Dixon Illinois is all deep and great for skiing. There is some good fishing
on that pool as well. The dam tailwaters can be good in the colder months for Walleye.
The pool above Dixon has some shallow areas and can be hard to navigate without a jet drive. It gets less fishing pressure and has good fishing.
Here's a fun fact, the Rock River area is also home to one of histories finest, Navy ace Butch O Hare. The
pilot who became the first Navy ace in
World War 2. To this day the
Navy loans a great deal of gratitude to this man,
who probably enjoyed fishing on the Rock River then as much as we do today.
