Fishing Secrets
I have a lot of tips that I don't like to share with the public, so I will put some on a secret page here.
How to work a jig:
There are many ways to work a jig and usually only way or two ways work at any given time. So if you wonder why you aren't catching fish, it's probably your presentation.
Hold it steady: This technic not only works the best but it is the most fun, you hold it steady and let the boat swim your jig around.
What happens is several things, Walleye are chasers, and the love to chase down prey. The vibration from your jig and rubber makes it easy for fish to zoom in on it,
even in murky water.
In the dam tailwaters in the late Fall and winter, Saugers and Walleye love a bait just sitting there not moving, not even swimming in the current, just sitting there
around large rocks,
and getting a fish to slam it while just holding it steady without moving it is very exciting.
Hopping it on the bottom a few inches:
Most of my clients do this that fish the Illinois River and most of the time it does not work for Walleye, but there are times that they do. I find that in the cold months,
when there is plenty of Shad around,
that the fish can be picky and they may watch a bait slowly bounce around or just sit on the bottom for some time before they take it. Another way to work it is to leave
it sit on the bottom for a minute, then
jerk it up and let it fall slowly back to the bottom. This can trigger bites when fish aren't active. That is kind of what most guys do when casting, and it works.
Jigging it:
This is what I do the most. I jig it to be sure I am close to the bottom, then hold it steady and eventually the fish will tell me which they prefer that day.
When they want it jigging I then just keep jigging it.
The trick is to jig it up high and let it fall slow. I have caught countless fish by dropping my jig in after putting a new bait on or what-ever,
so why not just jig it up high and keep dropping it down in front of their mouths.
I learned this while ice fishing, in cold water the fish may strike at anything that drops down in front of their mouths without even thinking.
Try anything
While ice fishing and being able to see the fish I learned a lot of different techniques that trigger bites. You can try different things and see if you can come up with something.
I have caught fish by twitching it on the bottom, by jigging it twice then letting it sit still, I have rocked the jig slightly while holding it steady to get the minnow to look active.
Perch love to chase so swimming the lure from side to side and holding it still works. Bluegill like an active lure flopping all over the place. Crappie like a flashing lure up high.
Bass like a lure jigged up and dropped straight down.
